This was taken not so far from where I grew up. The only reason I took this shot was the seemingly low clouds in the background creating a nice backdrop to the trees and the road. I fiddled around with it for a while until I ended up using a channel mixer layer with a reduced opacity, letting some color shine through. Toning was then done using an additional curves layer.

The slight tinge of color adds a beautiful touch to this dramatically stark landscape ... incredible sky! BTW, thanks for your response to my question; I've heard of Photomatix ... I'll be looking into it.
